1978年至1982年，淮北煤炭师范学院（淮北师范大学）数学系学习，获理学学士学位。

1982年至1985年，淮北煤炭师范学院（淮北师范大学）数学系教师。

1985年至1988年，山东大学数学系硕士研究生，获理学硕士学位。

1988年至1989年，淮北煤炭师范学院数学系讲师。

1989年至1991年，淮北煤炭师范学院数学系副主任。

1991年至1993年，复旦大学数学系博士研究生，获理学博士学位。1993年，晋升为教授。

1992年7月，加入中国***。1993年至1995年，中国科学院数学研究所博士后，完成博士后研究以后，相继在法国CIEP研修。

1995年至1997年，淮北煤炭师范学院副院长。

1997年至2003年，中国矿业大学副校长，中国矿业大学（北京）副校长。

2003年7月至2014年1月，中国矿业大学（北京）校长。

2013年8月，北京邮电大学校长。

2014年1月，免去中国矿业大学（北京）校长职务。

乔建永教授长期从事复分析、动力系统及其应用方面的学术研究，研究成果涉及复解析动力系统，亚纯函数理论，物理和工程问题中的解析方法等多个方面。

研究成果发表在Commun. Math. Phys.，Science in China等国内外专业学术刊物上。承担国家自然科学基金及国家科技部重点科研项目多项：

●国家杰出青年科学基金项目：复动力系统；

● 国家自然科学基金项目：关于茹利亚集的分布与拓扑复杂性研究；

● 国家科技部“973”项目：核心数学的前沿问题。

在中国矿业大学（北京）倡导构建研究型本科教育体系和开放式研究生教育体系，大力加强教学团队、科研团队和学科平台建设。在《理论动态》，《中国高等教育》等刊物上发表高等教育管理研究文章多篇。

多次应邀赴美国、英国、法国、德国、俄罗斯、日本和韩国等国二十余所大学和科研院所交流访问。
